The Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) has announced the state’s Academic Team Champions for the spring of 2012-13, as well as the final overall classification standings. Congratulations to East Lake (8A), Forest (7A), Lakewood Ranch (6A), Gulf Breeze (5A), Berkeley Prep (4A), Trinity Prep (3A), Southwest Florida Christian (2A) and South Walton (1A) for being overall classification winners.
The FHSAA Academic Team Champion recognition program honors teamwork, not only in competition but in the classroom as well. The academic achievement of all team members are factored into a team’s academic standing. The program recognizes teams in each of the 32 sports overseen by the Association, with an Academic Team Champion named in each classification.
“These schools embody the true meaning of the term ‘student-athlete,’ for they recognize that academic excellence is the most important pursuit for young men and women,” said Dr. Roger Dearing, FHSAA executive director. “Athletic competition teaches so many valuable life lessons, but it is in the classroom that these students’ future can really take flight.”
Each classification and overall sport winner receives a commemorative plaque. For overall classification winners, the top 10 schools in each category will receive points. Ten points will be awarded for a first place finish, nine points for second, etc. The school in each class with the highest cumulative point total for the entire school year will get a special award. Points awarded for teams in single-class sports will still count toward the overall standings.

The Florida High School Athletic Association supervises and regulates interscholastic athletic programs for high school students at member public and private schools. The organization also recognizes and honors academic achievement among student‐athletes statewide. Headquartered in Gainesville, it is the official governing body for interscholastic athletics in Florida.
