Florida NewsMakers: Nick Wiley

On this week’s “Florida NewsMakers” program, Nick Wiley, Executive Director of the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission, sits down with Sachs Media Group’s Trimmel Gomes. Wiley discusses how scientific data indicates that Florida’s 18-year-old gill net ban should remain in place. “There is clear evidence that the restrictions on gill nets has had a big benefit to our in-shore fisheries and that ecosystem, so we feel there is a valid reason for it,” Wiley notes. As the search continues to find a black bear that recently attacked a woman in Longwood, Wiley says the Commission is working to educate people who live in neighborhoods near large bear populations. He also discusses why the state might not see the return of its Python Challenge in 2014, as well as new ways to manage Everglades habitat and wildlife.
