Florida Bankers’ “Bank On My Dream” Contest Will Help Floridians’ Dreams Come True

Ten Floridians will each have a $5,000 dream fulfilled this summer through the Florida Bankers Association’s “Bank On My Dream” contest, and the public is invited to help select the winners.

The first phase of the contest launched April 17, when Florida nonprofit organizations were invited to nominate individuals with a dream that could be realized with a $5,000 prize.

Today marks the second phase of the contest, when the public is invited to vote for their favorite entries. Voting will begin today, Thursday, May 29 at 1:00 p.m. EDT and will end on Friday, June 20 at 11:59 p.m. EDT. Winners will be chosen and announced in July and August, based on the quality of the nomination and the level of public support. To qualify for consideration, the dream had to be largely attainable with the $5,000 cash prize.

“Florida bankers fund the dreams of millions of Floridians every year, helping them buy cars, start businesses and pay for college,” said Alex Sanchez, president and CEO of the Florida Bankers Association. “Sometimes, a small investment can have a big impact. This contest will demonstrate how $5,000 can make important dreams come true for 10 Floridians.”

Following the voting period, a panel of judges will select two winners per week for five weeks, to be announced in June and July. The nonprofits must agree to administer the funds and use them to fulfill the dream.

Florida bankers play an ongoing role in helping Floridians make their dreams come true, including dreams of owning a home and starting or growing a business. In 2012 alone, Florida financial institutions funded 461,771 mortgage loans totaling nearly $90 billion.

Last year, Florida banks made 48,473 business loans ranging from thousands of dollars to $1 million, including 33,261 loans of $100,000 or less; 8,018 between $100,000 to $250,000; and 7,194 of $250,000 to $1 million.
